We went out for a hike very early one June morning, off the beaten path close to home to avoid all the tourists that have flocked to the area despite the pandemic. We were walking a very narrow path with tall willow on both sides of us, rounded a corner that opened into a small meadow, and boom, came face to face with this guy. He was probably 30 yards from us and obviously heard us long before we spotted him. He wasn't the least bit bothered by our presence and quickly went back to munching on all the new spring willow leaves. We watched him for 20 minutes or so before he disappeared into the willow.
I LOVE the outdoors, and the mountains are my happy place. Many years ago, we visited the Canadian Rockies, and we instantly fell in love with what the mountains have to offer, from breathtaking scenery to countless wildlife opportunities. I remember traveling through a small town in British Columbia, Radium Hot Springs, where the sign that welcomes you to town says, “Mountains bring peace to the people.”. That quote and John Muir’s quote, “The mountains are calling and I must go” have resonated with me ever since. Whether it's shooting landscapes or wildlife, I find such a sense of peace and solitude just being there in the moment. Nourishment for the soul....a reminder for me that life is good.
